Overview: Background
As a young child, Sting Oakley became one of the experiments of Blue Cosmos, an organization that holds the belief that the altering of genes is wrong and that all Coordinators should be exterminated. These experiments are known as Extended - people who are raised from a very young age to do nothing but fight. A combination of fierce training and drug usage are used to enhance their abilities and turn them into the ultimate fighting machines. They are raised with the belief that their sole purpose is to fight and to win and are generally kept in check via these means. Other means of control include block words, which are used when the subject becomes uncontrollable or unruly. Block words generally have special meanings to each individual subject and will cause the subject to shut down mentally. It is not clear whether or not Sting has one, since it is never mentioned in the series.
Whether or not it was Sting's conscious choice to become a part of these experiments is unknown (though I highly doubt it), but he was raised in Lodonia's laboratory along with other children, including Auel and Stellar. Judging by what episode 25 shows us, Sting is best when it came to mobile suit piloting while Auel excelled with guns and Stellar, with knives. These three were weeded out from a large group of children after vigorous testing and training that forced them to kill the others in order to survive. Eventually, they were the only ones left and were assigned under Neo Lorrnoke's command. After missions, they must retire to these dome-like pods for maintenance so their body can continue to function properly. These pods can also be used to alter their memories, as seen when the memory of Stellar was wiped completely from Auel's and Sting's minds.
Not much else is known about Sting Oakley. Like all the other experiments, all personal information and data have been swept from the records.
